The Day that Wasn't

Thursday 19 June 2014

Today is our 21st wedding anniversary.  Last night while we played cards, we realized the extent of our sunburns. :(   Each of us had some.  Ireland does not have any shade trees (except at Kylemore Abbey).  Who thought that you needed to slather sunscreen all over your body in Ireland?  I put some on my face before we headed out yesterday and  reminded the rest of the family (no one else did), but I still ended up with burns on my legs, feet and arms!  I never get sunburn on my legs!

But today was quiet--kind of what a rainy day would have been like.  Randy was up early, concerned about our internet service that went out the night before.  He talked to the owner and she called the company, then came over and rebooted it (the connection is in the attic space above the cottage).  Then all was good.  Well, he went back to sleep, then I woke up and showered.  Soon everyone was up and we ate breakfast for lunch then Randy took another nap while Anneliese took a shower.  Soon everyone was ready so we decided to walk our area of the peninsula (we are on the Renvyle Peninsula).  So we went out on a road that only Randy and Anneliese had been on.  At each crossroads I randomly selected one of our children to choose which way to go.  We crisscrossed the areas above our cottage, mostly grazing land for sheep.  Like the rest of Ireland, rocky, green, and sheep everywhere!  We have seen fuschia and rhododendrons here 8 feet tall!  No trees, just crazy tall bushes! Even whole hedges of them! Eventually, we descended near the local "castle"  and walked back to our cottage--a bit over an hour.  Not long, but we at least went out.  Randy likes to walk long distances quickly with little conversation, I like to walk slowly, talking to others while I walk, Joshua likes to walk and talk, Shelby will walk but likes to talk.  Anneliese doesn't like walking and tends to lag behind but likes others to walk with her and talk.  So we all have different walking styles and speeds.  Here are some photos I took of our area:

Reminds me of a Minnesota prairie

Notice the stone walls leading right up into the mountains!

More stone walls!

We found horses!

You can see the Atlantic Ocean out past those islands!

After we returned, we read and used the internet and Anneliese and I played Scrabble.  It was a quiet day, but that is part of vacation too, not just frantic sightseeing, but spending time with the family, relaxing.
