Day 1: Australia: We're leaving on a jet plane!

Cool guy on the train to the airport!
We are on one of our airport waits.  First one in Minneapolis prior to take-off, only an hour after check-in and security.  We all got to go through pre-check--that was a nice break--shoes stay on and liquids and laptops can stay in the bags.  Second one (five hours long) in Los Angeles.  Then on to Australia!

Our traveling group (minus me)
We are five of us traveling:  Randy and I, Joshua, Randy's mom, Kathi, and her friend, Marian.  Randy was taking Kathi and Marian on a tour (tour planner and personal guide) and Joshua and I decided to accompany them instead of Randy planning a separate trip for the three of us when they returned.  And he planned it so that most of what we are seeing is different from the first time we went to Australia--only a few favorites are repeated.  My other two chicks are not traveling with us this year.  Shelby is staying home to work and is looking forward to playing house a bit--increased independence in a comfortable setting.  She will collect the mail and water the garden.  Anneliese is in New York for the summer, working in the film production center at the university and trying to get experience on films and enjoying being in New York without having classes.

With the stress of finishing the school year, traveling was not really real--it was something that was happening in the future.  Now that it's here, I'm looking forward to it, but i miss the super excitement that I used to have for traveling.  The first time I was in Europe, in college, I was SOOO excited--finally seeing all of the things that I had read about and dreamed about seeing someday.  Now I'm looking forward to it, but miss the almost over the top excitement that I had before, barely believing that it's me that was getting to see and experience these things.  I hope that I'm not jaded.

Later:  Flight from LA to Sydney was an hour late.  Our plane was an Airbus A380--Joshua took me to the window to see it.  He pointed out that it is the largest passenger plane made.  It has two floors with two different walkways from the terminal--one up and one down.  I sat next to a man that lives in Sydney and was returning from a trip to Rome and New York.  He was talking about the inexpensive prices in New York!  I told him to try Minneapolis next time for even better prices.  I had a window seat to LA and Joshua and Randy had the windows to Australia.
