Day 6: The Great Ocean Road

Sunday, 25 June, 2017

Today our only objective was to drive the Great Ocean Road.  We left at 8:00 and arrived back at 6:00.  Long day in and out of the car.  Today's blog is mostly landscape photos, sorry.  Joshua has decided that he doesn't want me to take pictures of him anymore so there will be fewer fun people pictures.  I have been limited to 10 total pictures of him on our trip; that is up from one per week (which would have been 3).   Hopefully it's just a phase he's going through, like the one when he was 6 when he made weird faces in every photo.   Our road today was very twisty and turny, hugging the coast when it could, going through forest when it couldn't.   The road was built as a living monument to the men and women who served in World War One and has changed routes over time, becoming closer and closer to hugging the shore.

We saw this on one of our small hikes today!

The day was mostly cloudy with a few bursts of sun.  At our last two stops, it was pouring rain and terribly windy, in fact I believe the rain (going sideways) looked faintly crystalline--I think it was trying to snow.

that's a freebie of Joshua (he didn't see me take it!)

This is when it started raining!

The Twelve Apostles changes number constantly because of the erosion of the wild Southern Ocean on the limestone of the cliffs.  It was originally called the Sow and Piggies by the early explorers.  The sow being the larger formation and the piggies being the small ones.

Everyday now, I've been wearing jeans, wool socks, a long-sleeve shirt, a sweatshirt, my rain jacket, and hiking boots.  I know it's winter, but geez.  I have other clothes (and sandals) in my bag waiting to be worn.  Ah well.  When we got to our hotel apartment, Randy and I went to our friendly grocery store across the street to get more cereal and milk for breakfast, some snacks, and we picked up a frozen pizza for dinner (since there don't seem to be any cafes or restaurants in our neighborhood).

While eating said pizza, we discussed Melbourne vs. Sydney. We came up with that Sydney is an older city and has a lower-scale, more human, classic vibe, while Melbourne, being a younger city, is more dense and has more energy.  Joshua isn't sure which he likes better.
